Heavy Equipment Operation

1. Operators shall perform a walk around of their equipment prior to operating, to check for leaks, flat tires, and mechanical defects prior to start-up and operation. All oil and coolant levels, fuel, brakes, lights, mirrors, horn; back-up alarm, fire extinguisher and seat belts are to be checked. R.O.P.S in good condition

2. Check and ensure that all personnel are clear of equipment prior to start-up.

3. all equipment must be operated in such a manner that it does not endanger others (ie looking back when reversing, using extreme caution when working near personnel or other equipment.

4. Always park equipment so that fuel and maintenance personnel have access to equipment.

5. When refuelling equipment, the engine must be stopped, all smoking materials extinguished and any known sources of ignition eliminated. The operator must dismount the machine until fuelling and/or servicing is complete.

6. Defective equipment must not be operated, it must be parked and the Supervisor must be notified.

7. An operator, who has reasonable cause to believe the equipment or load is hazardous, is to STOP and SECURE the equipment load and report the condition to the Supervisor immediately.

8. All operators shall wear seatbelts, hardhats and safety footwear.

9. Ensure clearances around vehicle before moving.

10. Loading equipment operators shall determine when hauling equipment can move.

11. Maintenance personnel or superintendent shall be consulted for towing procedures if units become stuck. No machines shall be pulled out unless they are present.

12. Equipment must be operated within the Manufacturer's specifications and limitations taking into consideration weather and site conditions

13. Only authorized and qualified workers are to operate mobile equipment.

14. Operation of equipment without authority may result in termination of employment.

15. Operators will be directly responsible for the safe operation of their assigned equipment.

16. Equipment blades, buckets or forks are to be lowered to the ground, and machines secured against movement, any time they are left unattended.

17. On steep grades where brakes may not be sufficient for control, equipment must be snubbed or otherwise assisted.

18. Equipment is to positioned so that no swinging part is closer than 600mm (2 ft) to any obstruction.

19. Operators must not leave a suspended load unattended at any time.

20. Elevated equipment parts, including dump boxes, must be securely blocked before allowing workers beneath them.

21. Operators must always face equipment when mounting or dismounting, and use the three point contact method. They must never jump off a machine.

22. No passengers are allowed to ride on equipment not equipped to carry additional personnel.

23. Whenever the vision is obstructed, including during the backing of equipment, the use of a competent signal person is required.

24. Good housekeeping.

25. Use of cell phones and all personal CD players, walkman, etc (with headphones) is strictly prohibited when operating equipment.

26. when working in the safe limit of approach of any energized overhead power line the owner will be notified as listed in schedule 4 of the OH&S codes

27. no worker shall place material or earth it doing so reduces the clearance height of an overhead power lines in accordance of schedule 4 of the OH&S codes

28. Safe Limit of approach for all energized lines above/below ground, (Part 17 Schedule 4 of the Occupational Health and Safety Code Act Regulations of Alberta)
